A New York State Trooper sustained minor injuries in a multi-vehicle crash at a busy intersection early Tuesday morning, disrupting rush-hour traffic. The incident, which occurred around 6:34 a.m on January 20th. at the junction of Clifton Country Road and State Route 146, involved three vehicles and is currently under investigation by State Police.
According to Trooper Stephanie O’Neil, a spokeswoman for the New York State Police, the trooper was heading north on Clifton Country Road when their patrol vehicle entered the intersection. At that moment, an eastbound passenger vehicle on Route 146 collided with the trooper’s car. The impact caused the passenger vehicle to then strike a third vehicle traveling west on Route 146.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing emergency crews arrive quickly on the scene, redirecting traffic around the damaged vehicles by 7 a.m. Photos from the area showed a visibly dented State Police cruiser positioned in the middle of the intersection, with debris scattered across the lanes. Fortunately, the trooper’s injuries were described as minor, and no other drivers or passengers were hurt. O’Neil confirmed that the trooper was not responding to an emergency at the time and had neither lights nor sirens activated.
This stretch of Route 146, a key artery connecting Clifton Park to nearby Schenectady and Albany, is no stranger to accidents, especially during early morning commutes when visibility can be low and roads slippery from winter conditions. Local residents have long voiced concerns about the intersection’s safety, citing heavy traffic volumes and occasional confusion with traffic signals. “It’s a hotspot for fender-benders,” said one nearby business owner who declined to be named. “With the growth in Clifton Park, we need better signage or maybe even a redesign.”
The crash comes amid a forecast for potential winter weather this weekend, including a possible storm and frigid temperatures, which could exacerbate road hazards in the Capital Region. State Police are reminding drivers to exercise caution, maintain safe distances, and adhere to speed limits, particularly in high-traffic areas like this one.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not released details on potential citations or causes, such as distracted driving or road conditions. Clifton Park Spark will provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, commuters are advised to use alternate routes like Vischer Ferry Road or Grooms Road to avoid delays in the area.
