The Shenendehowa School District has announced the unexpected passing of High School Orchestra Director and dedicated music educator, Joseph Gumpper.
A lifelong Shenendehowa educator and pillar of the Capital Region music community, Mr Gumpper touched the lives of thousands of students across more than two decades.

He began his career teaching in the district’s elementary schools, moved on to direct the middle school orchestras, and since 2006 had served as High School Orchestra Director at both East and West High Schools while also maintaining a private teaching studio.
Joe was a familiar face in Shenendehowa musical theater productions (most recently conducting the orchestra for Mamma Mia!) and earlier directed the Delmar Community Orchestra, bringing beautiful music to audiences throughout the Capital Region.
“Mr. Gumpper was an outstanding educator who was wholly committed to his students. His loss to our system and community is profound,” said Frank Rosselli, Academic Administrator for Fine Arts.
If you have memories of Mr. Gumpper you’d like to share, feel free to share them here so our community can celebrate his legacy together.

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Gumpper as a teacher for both middle and high school. All very formative years when it comes to our taste in music. I was pretty bad about practicing and I remember him having a giant bag of Haribo assorted gummies that he brought back from Germany. Those became a useful bribe for middle school me hahaha. He would always show us how good he was at counting different time signatures on each hand and I remember spending so long trying to get it myself (turned kind of into a party trick for me).
I find myself still thinking about him 14 years after graduating. Whenever I’m snapping a polyrhythm, eating some gummy bears, and especially when I hear a beautiful fiddle. I hope he knew how much he meant to us all and our journey with music. Thank you for everything.
