Power’s Inn & Pub closes after 15 years
Another area favorite has shut its doors, last month it was The Cookie Factory, this month it’s Power’s Inn & Pub.
Last call came a day early 😢
So, What Happened?
Power’s Inn & Pub at 130 Meyer Road, Halfmoon, NY (Clifton Park mailing address, off Route 9 at Farm-to-Market Road) closed this week after 15 years. Jim and Charlie Cahill announced on Facebook Friday, Sept. 11th, 2026 that they were closing after 15 years, with last service planned for Saturday. Unfortunately, a keg cooler failed overnight Thursday, so they could not open Friday or Saturday either.
They thanked regulars who had “become close friends,” and signed off “Until our last pint.” Charlie is Bryah Gifford’s sister; she and Jim had been running the pub since his death in 2021. Both also had other full-time careers and said in May they wanted to retire.
The whole story
History of Power’s Inn & Pub
Open a section below to learn more about the family timeline, ghosts, and the food and drinks that kept people in Clifton Park and Halfmoon coming back for more.
Family and operating history
- 1995: Randy Gifford launched Giffy’s Bar-B-Q (catering first, then a Clifton Park restaurant). The sit-down BBQ restaurant closed in 2015 so the family could focus on catering.
- October 2011: Power’s opened in the old inn after a gut renovation. Originally styled as Power’s Irish Pub. The name comes from Peggy Power Gifford, Bryah and Charlie’s mother.
- 2018: The 1820s blacksmith barn was rebuilt as The Barn at Power’s. Halfmoon and Clifton Park supervisors issued a joint proclamation thanking Bryah for the preservation work.
- July 2020: Bryah and Cara took ownership of the property (Hoffman family had owned the house since 1965).
- Aug. 12, 2021: Bryah Gifford, 42, sadly passed away after collapsing in the Power’s kitchen. The pub closed about two months, then reopened Oct. 27, 2021 with the Cahills running day-to-day.
- Feb. 9, 2025: Randy Gifford died after cancer. His memorial was held at The Barn.
- May 2026: Whole package listed at $2.5M; pub was supposed to stay open until a sale. Four months later the pub closed and the ask dropped to $1.825M.
The 1786 building and haunted lore
The inn is dated to 1786. Earlier restaurant names include Old Dublin Inn and Old Dater Inn. George Dater is the 19th-century tavern keeper most associated with it; the Meyer family (street name) ran the blacksmith barn.
The house is described as having six or seven small dining rooms, a pub, an outdoor deck, and fireplaces. Staff lore mentioned Emma in the entry, Sophia and Robert in the ballroom, and “Jim” if you bang the floor. Mobility is limited because of the age of the house.
We actually had a 2024 post on the history of the inn and the ghosts that haunt it, read it here.
What the restaurant was known for
Irish-pub / American comfort food in a historic house: daily specials, rotating craft drafts (they advertised about 18), deck dining, live music some weekends, and dog-friendly Yappy Hours.
Typical dishes cited in reviews: fish and chips, Reuben, burgers, buffalo mac and cheese, fried pickles, French onion soup, salmon. A neighborhood favorite for groups and outdoor seating more than a regional “best of” destination.
Large-party line that was listed: 518-406-5002.
For sale
Land, buildings, and business: $1.825 million
Listed with CBRE Upstate NY (Tom Savino and Michael DelVecchio). Cara Gifford owns the real estate. A buyer can keep the Power’s name or start a new concept. In May, Cara told the Times Union that selling would help settle her late husband’s estate and let her focus on Ballston Spa businesses The Factory Eatery & Spirits and J.J.’s Snack Bar.
