Clifton Park’s Lost Amusement Park

Clifton Park Amusement Park

For 3 decades, Clifton Park had its own amusement park. Visitors reached the park by trolley, crossing an 1,800-foot bridge (then the world’s longest trolley bridge) for just a nickel.

The park (originally opened as “Luna Park” in 1906) offered a slew of attractions that would still impress even today!

The amusement park offered a little something for everyone: house of glass maze, the “Blue Streak” rollercoaster, a carousel, a ferris wheel spinning over the riverside, a “Whip” ride slinging riders around, a “Razzle Dazzle” ocean-wave machine rocking like a boat at sea, and even a flume.

From Boom to Bust: The Great Depression’s Impact

By the 1930s, times were changing. The park had gone through multiple owners and names – from Luna Park to Dolle’s Park to Palisades Park, and finally to simply Rexford Park – but it couldn’t escape larger social forces.

After the 1933 season, Rexford Amusement Park closed its gates, marking the end of an era. A major reason was the Great Depression, which left many local families with little extra money for leisure.

Remnants and Remembering Today

Venture into the woods near the Mohawk in Rexford, and you can still spot old concrete footings from the roller coaster and other structures, now covered in moss and ivy. Clifton Park’s town historian notes that these remnants keep the park’s story alive, sparking curiosity and nostalgia for new generations who never got to experience it firsthand.
